Mexican Workshop

from 19 to 30 January 2009 •  Thirteen students selected on project work from 2nd to 5th year (art and design) went with designers Fabien Cagani and Matt Sindall to Mexico City, to meet their counterparts from the Mexico Centro School.

The group also stayed in a potters' village to produce works in clay. The "totem" was chosen as a form expressing the encounter of two cultures, and stacking as the building method. The work reflects close collaboration between students and teaching staff from both schools, based on the village's living Mexican tradition. Funded by Reims' ESAD, the project was also backed by Culture France.

Jewellery Workshop

2009 •  Reims ESAD & Paris AFEDAP Partnership. Theme: TRANSIENT/LASTING: how to wear jewellery today? A project steered by Véronique Maire and Frédérique Lucien, teachers at ESAD and Brune Boyer teacher at AFEDAP.

Exploring notions of what is transient and lasting in relation to the body, both through drawing and research into volumes from various materials. The whole gave rise to a project which confronts these notions. The second stage focused on developing and finalising the project through prototypes or models.

Crazy Week

Workshop in India

January 2008 •  This workshop at the National Institute of Design, India's leading design school, has a multi-layer ambition:

- Bringing Reims students face to face with India's infinitely rich and varied cultural environment, with the idea that, when exercising their profession, designers must grasp different and often novel situations.
- Immersing students in their future professional environment: globalisation.
- Positioning oneself in the process of contemporary thought on design. Carrying out joint Indian and French research, looking at the capacity of traditional expertise to meet contemporary issues: what form of design against a globalised backdrop, what solutions for sustainable development can be found in traditional techniques and materials... India, which in certain aspects seems to be on a through train from the 19th to the 21st century, is doubtless the country in the best position to provide answers to these questions.
Workshop results illustrate the extent to which hypotheses proved to be right throughout the 2 weeks in Ahmedabad.

Crazy Week 2007

Workshop in Beijing

2007 •  The ESAD of Reims trains creators in the context of the mix of cultures and globalisation. The contemporary society suffers from some negative aspects such as the industrial relocation, but has positive effects too, such as the opening up to all the cultures of the world. It is important to expose the future professionals in design to that.

A group of a dozen students supervised by two teachers / designers Matt Sindall and Fabien Cagani, carried a two-week stay at Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing, and worked on a joint project with Chinese teachers and students. Different exercises gradually led to an intense cultural dialogue and to the achievement of an exhibition at CAFA in Beijing.
